This is my first ever blog post!
Hello!
I wanted to post some of my own work, something that I
am happy with and sums up my personal style. I started an illustration degree
this September and I was asked to complete a project in the summer. This
project was to create 4 drawings in your own style in 4 themes given to us. The
4 themes were:
- What’s in the secret hiding place?
- Why did the chicken cross the road?
- Stop the traffic!
- What’s growing?
I wanted to draw them in my own style but in a continuous
theme. I decided to limit my colour pallet to primary colours which is
appropriate to children’s publishing as that is what I am passionate about. I
also decided to create a character that could be included in all 4 drawings.
This character is a little girl in a yellow dress discovering different things
happening around her.

I wanted a classic image for this one so I decided to draw a
jack in the box. I would actually be terrified if I unwound a jack in the box
and a freaky looking clown popped out in my face.
When I heard the title of this theme I laughed. Anyone who
knows me is aware of my obsession of drawing chickens... weird I know. I wanted
to make this illustration funny and quirky. I chose to draw a chicken in a
supermarket buying eggs and the character looking puzzled.

This theme I struggled with for a while. I wanted something
funny but I really didn’t want to draw anything urban e.g. cars and streets. I
decided to draw an illustration based on the pelican/zebra crossing.

This is the drawing I’m least happy with. I decided to draw
a tree growing something more desirable than fruit i.e. cupcakes. The lack of
narrative makes me like it less. If I was to re-do it, I’d want to create a
story from the theme.
This project was a bit of fun and it was nice to see what
other people had done. Everyone interprets the brief differently which is nice
to learn from each other. With the first project ever of my degree completed, I
can’t wait to continue!!
